"Britton"
was illiterate, and his name is spelled several
different
ways throughout hi life. When he was 17 he
volunteered to
serve in the war of 1812. In 1819 a pension was
filed, but
denied, claiming Britton had deserted in 1816.
His deserting was
attributed to the fact he couldn't read or write
, (Britton)
believing when everyone else left, it was time
for him to leave
also. |
